why were the munich olympic games viewed as being of particular importance world politics, national relations, and reconciliation with the Jewish people?

I think the Holocaust occured before that and Germany wanted to prove that they were moving forward and that they werent the same anti-jewish country.

Did you read this article about the massacre?

Yes, I have read that. But in terms of reconciliation with the Jewish people, that didn't do much, it only caused more problems.

I agree. Also, throughout the Olympic history, current wars and battles have ususally been put on hold through the games. This massacre was a flagrant denial of such Olympic ideals.

True, thank you :)

West Germany took ineffective action from the start (Olympic security) to the end, with poor planning, lack of trained response teams, and lack of command and control. The Jewish People were not happy over any of that. It was just like the excuses they had heard for years in regards to the Holocaust.

The Munich Olympic Games of 1972 were indeed viewed as being of significant importance in terms of world politics, national relations, and reconciliation with the Jewish people. There are several reasons for this:

1. Historical Context: The Holocaust, during which millions of Jews were systematically persecuted and killed by Nazi Germany, occurred just a few decades prior to the 1972 Munich Olympics. The atrocities committed against the Jewish people were still fresh in the collective memory of the world. As such, Germany wanted to use the Olympics as an opportunity to show that they were moving forward, acknowledging the past, and making efforts towards reconciliation.

2. Symbolic Value: The Munich Olympics were highly symbolic, as they were held in Germany, the country responsible for the Holocaust. By hosting the Games, Germany aimed to demonstrate its transformation from a nation associated with anti-Semitism to one that stood for peace, unity, and international cooperation.

3. Diplomatic Relations: The Olympic Games serve as a platform for nations to come together and promote peace, understanding, and dialogue. Germany saw the Munich Olympics as an opportunity to improve its diplomatic relations with countries around the world, particularly those who had been affected by the Holocaust. By hosting a successful and peaceful event, they aimed to boost their international reputation and foster reconciliation.

4. Jewish Memorial: As part of the Munich Olympics, Germany dedicated a portion of the Games to a memorial service for the Israeli athletes who were tragically killed by a Palestinian terrorist group known as Black September. This memorial aimed to honor the victims, express solidarity with the Israeli people, and show Germany's commitment to remembering the past.

In summary, the Munich Olympic Games were viewed as being of particular importance in terms of world politics, national relations, and reconciliation with the Jewish people due to the historical context of the Holocaust, the symbolic value of hosting the Olympics, the potential for improving diplomatic relations, and the inclusion of a memorial service for the Israeli athletes.
