Write a four paragraph literary essay in response to the following question. Be sure to include a thesis statement in your introduction, provide textual evidence in the body paragraphs, and end the essay with a strong conclusion. You may use your books and other notes you have during the course for reference.
This semester you read several memoirs, including pieces by Ernesto Galarza and Russell Baker. Return to “Barrio Boy” and “No Gumption” now. How are these two memoirs similar? How are they different? In what ways are the authors’ choices and depictions related to the subject matter of their stories?

  • Literary Analysis and Composition I -

K12-er, huh? Sorry, but that would be called cheating, and surprisingly, cheating is against the rules. Shocker, isn't it?

    Good luck in life, person.

  • Literary Analysis and Composition I -

Why don't you do the work yourself. It helps by reading the memoirs.

  • Literary Analysis and Composition I -

It's so funny that the person who asked the initial question, obviously didn't read the EXTREMELY short Memoirs. If you have to ask for help with the Day 90 LC Semester Test: Part 2, well then I hope you know how to work a cash register for McDonalds, cause you aren't going anywhere in life.

  • Literary Analysis and Composition I -

WOW! You people really think you're soo smart! Just because someone is struggling with an ela essay DOES NOT mean they will be working in McDonalds!!! Lets hope you don't end up there @K-12 Student!!! That would really be a shame! I was struggling with essay too even though i read the memoirs! so you people should think before posting an "answer" if you could even call it that!!

“Barrio Boy” and “No Gumption” are both written in first person. They both share conflicts. They are similar because they both lived in close time periods in 20th century, and were very poor. They went through a lot of struggle but in the end they achieved a lot.
Both stories share similar conflicts. These are both memoir stories written in first person, and they both talk about being young children.

The difference between the two stories is that “No Gumption” is about a boy who delivers newspapers to help support his family and to learn how to have a job. His mother wants him to have gumption so he won't end up the way his father was. In “Barrio Boy”, it is about an immigrant who goes to school and learns English. It would probably be difficult for him to find a job. He has much ‘Gumption’ and does not need his mother to push him to learn.
