Thoughts of confusion trying to understand what had just happened began to fill my mind. But no matter what, the law was the law and Jean Valjean is a convict who must pay the penalty for his criminal past.

Arresting him would be such a dishonorable thing to do but setting him free would be against the law. For the first time in my life, to act lawfully would mean acting immorally. Lost with uncertainty, my only option now is death.
3.)Plus tard ce jour-là, nous avons rencontré de nouveau! Cette fois, il tenait le corps d'un homme blessé. Valjean se tourne délibérément lui-même, mais demande à prendre pour aider le blessé à l'hôpital et de voir sa fille une dernière fois avant qu'il ne retourne en prison. En attendant Valjean, j'ai commencé à errer dans les rues de Paris. Comment pourrait-Jean Valjean est un homme noble? Son interpellation serait une chose honteuse à le faire mais mettre le libérer serait contraire à la loi. Pour la première fois dans ma vie, à agir légalement signifierait agissant immorale.
