what measures can a company take to protect their equipment from theft?

ive only thought of one:-
write the companies name on the equipment

Equip them with a device that will set off alarms if they are not deactivated when the equipment leaves the premises.

Since we're talking specifically about computers, I presume, there are risks other than just having the equipment lifted directly. A common theft, for example, is to remove memory or other components from the machine, leaving the machine there until somebody notices it's running slow or is missing a disk!

It's common in IT to lock the case on corporate PCs so they can't be easily opened. It is also common to keep servers and other central equipment in locked racks in locked rooms, and, failing that, to chain them to desks or other fittings.
