Studies show that the income elasticity of demand for servants in the United States exceeds 1. Nevertheless, the number of servants has been decreasing during the last 75 years while incomes have risen sygnificantly. How can these facts be reconciled?
automatic washers, automatic ovens, prepackaged foods, disposable diapers, vacumn cleaners, dishwashers, ...the need for servants has greatly decreased due to labor saving devices invented for the old mundane things servants did. Also, in the last 75 years, clothes are predominately manufactured over seas, not in the home. This task has been transfered.
