What is the aim of the task given to learners of english as a foreign language when they need to correct the mistakes in some text?(not spelling but some facts about history)
My only guess is that the teacher wants to make sure that the students know the correct facts. I shocked 7th grade geography students years ago when the Soviet Union fell apart. I had them WRITE in their books the new information.
To be sure what the teacher's purpose is, I suggest you ask him/her.
