You are mentoring a person in another department. This person comes to you and explains that the group she is working with is arguing over procedures employed to accomplish a project. Additionally, the group members do not seem to have much respect for the leader: Certain people constantly disagree with him and test his decisions. Using the Tuckman model of forming, storming, norming and performing, explain the model and what phase the group is in. Use the Library and Internet to research this topic.

In your own words, please post your response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

Hi Rene. We actually don't give out grades here at Jiskha, so we won't be graded on anything here. :-)

Other than knowing what the Tuckman model is, I'm not sure what the problem is with this assignment. I would start by looking through your books and notes to find out more about the Tuckman model.

Here is a lot of information on it:

Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

This site will help you explain the model.

They are probably in the storming phase.

Please post your response here, and we'll be glad to help you further.

The Tuckman model, also known as the stages of group development, describes the different phases that a team typically goes through in order to achieve a high level of performance. These stages are forming, storming, norming, and performing.

1. Forming: In the forming stage, the team members come together, get to know each other, and establish the team's goals. During this stage, individuals are likely to be polite and reserved as they try to figure out their role within the team.

2. Storming: The storming stage is characterized by conflicts and disagreements within the team. Members may have different ideas and perspectives, which can lead to arguments and power struggles. This is a critical stage where the team's dynamics and structure are being defined.

3. Norming: In the norming stage, the team begins to resolve their conflicts and establish norms or rules for working together. They start to develop trust, understanding, and respect for each other. Roles and responsibilities become clear, and group cohesion starts to emerge.

4. Performing: The performing stage is when the team reaches a high level of productivity and effectiveness. Members work together seamlessly, utilizing their strengths and collaborating effectively to achieve the team's goals. There is a high level of trust, mutual support, and synergy within the team.

Considering the situation described, it seems that the group is currently in the storming phase. The presence of arguments and lack of respect towards the leader indicate a stage of conflict and power struggles within the team. This is a normal and expected phase that groups go through as they attempt to find their identity and establish their own ways of working together.

To provide further insight and support to your mentee, I recommend conducting some research to gain a deeper understanding of the Tuckman model and its application in team development. The library and the internet can be valuable sources for this research. By exploring different perspectives and examples, you can provide your mentee with specific strategies and techniques to help the team progress through the storming phase and ultimately reach the performing stage.
