Which one of the following games would be most helpful to a child learning to speak English as a second language?

A.Follow the Leader
B.Old Maid
C.Checkers
D.Jump Rope.
I pick the letter A.

Unless the rules have changed, Follow the Leader has few verbal clues or exercises, nor does checkers.

I have watched girls jump rope, they seem to have a lot of verbal chants: I remember one my oldest daughter chanted: Sitting on the fence, waiting to be kissed, then came a guy, who started to kiss: One, two, three, ...

Old maid is a sexist game, out of favor with the old maid liberators. But card games (Fish, etc) offer verbal interaction which is backed up with pictures.

I would favor card games first, but Jump Roping is a very verbal game (for girls, I am sexist).

Okay thanks for your help

Great choice! Follow the Leader would be the most helpful game for a child learning to speak English as a second language. Through this game, the child can practice listening skills, vocabulary building, and sentence structure.

To play Follow the Leader, you would need at least two participants. One person acts as the leader and the others follow their actions. The leader can engage the children in various language-related activities. Here are a few examples:

1. Vocabulary Building: The leader can teach new English words by pointing to objects or pictures around the room and saying their names aloud. The other children can then follow the leader's actions by repeating the words.

2. Sentence Structure: The leader can give simple instructions using complete sentences and have the other children follow them. For example, "Touch your nose," or "Jump twice." This helps children learn basic sentence structure and grammar.

3. Listening Skills: The leader can give oral instructions that involve sequencing or following multiple steps. For example, "First, touch your ears. Then, hop on one foot. Finally, clap your hands." This helps children improve their listening skills and understand the order of instructions.

Remember, repetition and patience are key when teaching language skills. The more you engage the child in speaking and listening activities during Follow the Leader, the more they will develop their English language abilities.
