Divergent boundaries are regions where tectonic plates are moving apart.

The Divergent Boundary is closely related to the Plate Tectonics Theory. The Plate Tectonics Theory explains the movement and interaction of large pieces of the Earth's lithosphere, called tectonic plates. These plates float on top of the semi-fluid asthenosphere below.

At Divergent Boundaries, tectonic plates move away from each other due to the upwelling of hot magma from the mantle. This process is known as seafloor spreading. The upwelling magma creates new oceanic crust, which pushes the existing crust apart. As the crust spreads, it forms a gap where new lithosphere is continuously generated.
