Why would racial passing be more likely in the Caribbean than in the United States?

Jim Crow laws wove into the fabric of all, a sense of better than black. I think this lesson focuses on exactly the origin of racial discrimantion that we have suffered this century. I do not believe slavery had much to do with it, it was these laws passed after reconstruction (to get even with carpetbaggers and scalawags) that started it. Others think it had roots earlier, but I see the heart of it here.
