Hi, I'm suppose to be doing an essay on To Kill A mockingBird. On my intro paragraph, my last sentence has to be 'explicitly stated plan' , is this right?

"I will provide evidence from the novel which show that the three characters mentioned above, fulfill a role that a mother figure would have."

Please help. thanks!

yes i like it!

No!! Please don't write any sentence in your paper that says "I will..." You'll sound as if you're still in 3rd grade!

That last sentence in your intro is your thesis statement. Read the samples in this website -- and the corrections for each one.

Then post what you think a good thesis statement would be, and someone here will be able to comment.

My teacher gave us an outline in how to write the intro paragraph. He said to follow:

The things u have to have are:
1. Linkage to real life
2. Thesis statement
3. Purpose of essay(can be implied)
4. Explicity stated plan.

So, im guessing he wants the thesis somewhere after 'linkage to real life'.

Urms.. okay i rephrased it.
"In this essay, there will be evidence provide which show that the following characters mentioned above fulfill roles that a mother figure would have.
Is this okay? Is grammar okay?

Thanks!

That's me *May btw.. i was on my sister's computer who also uses jiskha.

Is this for sentence 2 or sentence 4?

this is for sentence 4.

the 'explicity stated plan'

OK, and which two characters? And are you going to say that BOTH of them fulfill roles of a mother figure?

Yes, the characters and the roles they fulfill are stated in my thesis.

is my 'explicity stated plan' written correctly?

No, you still need to get rid of "In this essay, there will be evidence..."

Here's an example of what has been termed a "blueprinting" thesis statement -- that is, telling the plan for the paper in advance:

In Emily Dickinson’s poetry, there are images and ideas that all humans can identify with, including love, beauty, and loneliness.

“In the process of making a too-vague thesis more precise, you may find yourself outlining the major sections of your paper, as in the preceding example, which prepares the readers for a three-part criticism of the [poetry of Emily Dickinson]. This technique, known as blueprinting, helps readers know exactly what to expect as they read on. It also helps you, the writer, control the shape of your essay.” (from Diana Hacker's book called A Writer's Reference)

So again I ask you -- which two characters? And what are the main divisions of your paper?

"In Emily Dickinson’s poetry, there are images and ideas that all humans can identify with, including love, beauty, and loneliness" , isnt that the third sentence of "Purpose of essay(can be implied)"?

Urms , I'm suppose to be doing an essay on three characters who act as mother figures to Scout and Jem. The three characters i picked are Calpurnia, Ms.Maudie, and Aunt Alexandra. I'm going to be writing a paragraph on each of them.
