Okay i think i understand this wrod problem but i need help

this is the problem:

keith weighs 200 pounds. He wants to weigh less than 175 pounds. If he can lose an average of 2 pounds per a week on a certain diet, how long should he stay on his diet to reach his goal weight??

Write an inequality to represent the data in the questions above?

I go 200 less than 175 = 2

please tell me if this is right and what i did wrong.

please and thank you

200lbs - 175lbs = 25lbs

so keith needs to lose 25lbs or more to reach his target weight of 175lbs
so 25 divided by 2 (Lbs loss a week) = 12.5
therefore 12.5 weeks will reach his target of 175lbs or 13 weeks to reach 174lbs (which is less, where he wanted to be)

The inequality would be:

200-2x < 175

because 200 is his current weight, and x would be the number of weeks it will take to reach his weight. 200 minus the weight per week should equal less than 175. Does this make sense?

Thanks emily and jimmy for your help

To write the inequality representing the given information, we need to consider the goal weight and the rate of weight loss.

First, let's define a variable for the number of weeks Keith stays on his diet. Let's call it "w".

Next, let's establish the starting weight, which is 200 pounds. Since Keith wants to weigh less than 175 pounds, we can represent this as:

Weight after w weeks on the diet < 175 pounds

Since Keith is losing an average of 2 pounds per week, we can calculate the weight lost over w weeks as 2 * w. Therefore, our inequality becomes:

200 - (2 * w) < 175

Please note that in this inequality, we subtract the weight lost (2 * w) from the initial weight of 200 to represent the weight after w weeks.

You mentioned that you wrote "200 less than 175 = 2", which is not correct. Instead of using the equal sign (=), we should use the less than sign (<) to indicate that the weight should be less than 175 pounds. Additionally, the value of 2 represents the average weight loss per week, not the difference between 200 and 175.

To summarize, the correct inequality representing the given information is:

200 - (2 * w) < 175

To find the number of weeks Keith should stay on his diet to reach his goal weight, you can solve this inequality by isolating the variable "w".
