My daughter has a math paper that asks to make a stem-and-leaf plot of data. I have no idea what this is!

These sites explain stem-and-leaf plots of data.

Thank you!

search stem and leaf in google and you might find a site that will help you.

i need to Get help with algebra-understanding word problems.

type a word problem in then. maybe i can help?

We'll be glad to help you.

The data is breeds of dogs and the weight. The plot needs to contain the data about the dogs, with one stem labeled 0. I'm not sure how to put the data together in the stem-and-leaf plot.

Johnna - click on that first link that Ms. Sue gave you. It explains very clearly.

Thanks, I think I understand now. I guess I'll know for sure when the paper is graded!

A stem-and-leaf plot is a way to organize and display data, typically used in statistics. It shows how the individual values in a data set are distributed. It is particularly useful when dealing with small to medium-sized data sets.

To create a stem-and-leaf plot, follow these steps:

1. Write down all the data values in order from smallest to largest.
2. Separate each value into two parts: the "stem" and the "leaf". The stem consists of the leftmost digit(s) of each value, while the leaf consists of the rightmost digit of each value.
3. Write the stems in a vertical column from lowest to highest. Align them on the left side of your paper.
4. Write the leaves next to their respective stems, in increasing order. Align them accordingly.

Let's go through an example with a small data set: 8, 9, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19

1. In order, the values are: 8, 9, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19
2. The stems will be the leftmost digits: 8, 9, 9, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1
The leaves will be the rightmost digits: 8, 9, 9, 1, 2, 4, 6, 9
3. Write the stems in a vertical column:

8 |
9 |
9 |
1 |
1 |
1 |
1 |
1 |
1 |
1 |

4. Write the corresponding leaves next to their stems:

8 | 8
9 | 9 9
1 | 1 2 4 6 9

This representation allows you to easily see how the data is distributed. In this example, there are three values in the 8 stem, two values in the 9 stem, and five values in the 1 stem.

I hope this explanation helps you understand how to create a stem-and-leaf plot for your daughter's math paper!
