Hello,

I am working on Methylene Blue dye adsorption for my thesis. I am embarassed to say I don't know basic chemistry. Anyway, my question is I have Methylene Blue Trihyrate 95%. I am trying to prepare stock solution. If I plan to make 1000 mg/l of solution, Is it as simple as "do I mix 1000 mg of MB with 1 litre of water"? I am not sure what the 95% means. Does it mean that if I add 1000 mg to 1 litre of water, I actually get 950 mg/l??

I hope I made myself clear, Thank you very much for your time.

When the instructions don't say, MOST of the time it means mass percent. Is there some other printing there, such as w/w or w/v; i.e., 95% w/w/ or 95% w/v? That will tell us what you want to know? Let me know and I can give you instructions.

I re-read the question and you have some contradictions? Do you want 95% w/w (or w/v) or do you want 1000 mg/L? The 1000 mg/L is easy to do.

Hello!

No need to be embarrassed! Chemistry can be complex, but I'll do my best to explain it to you.

When you see a percentage mentioned next to a chemical compound, such as "Methylene Blue Trihydrate 95%," it generally refers to the purity of the compound. In this case, it means that the Methylene Blue Trihydrate you have is 95% pure. That is, out of 100 grams of the compound, 95 grams are Methylene Blue Trihydrate, and the remaining 5 grams are impurities.

Now, let's move on to preparing the stock solution. If you wish to make a 1000 mg/l (milligrams per liter) solution, you would need to dissolve 1000 mg of Methylene Blue Trihydrate in 1 liter of water.

However, considering the 95% purity of your Methylene Blue Trihydrate, you need to account for that. Since only 95% of your compound is the actual Methylene Blue Trihydrate, you will have to adjust the amount accordingly.

To calculate the correct amount of Methylene Blue Trihydrate to add, you can use the following formula:

Correct amount = desired concentration / purity percentage

In your case, the correct amount will be:

Correct amount = 1000 mg/l / 0.95

Plugging in the values, you'll find that the correct amount of Methylene Blue Trihydrate to add is approximately 1053 mg/l.

So, to prepare a 1000 mg/l Methylene Blue Trihydrate solution with 95% purity, dissolve 1053 mg of Methylene Blue Trihydrate in 1 liter of water.

I hope this helps! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.
