Can you please help me understand what is meant by "democratic spirit"?

The democratic spirit is the beliefs and actions that show that people have equal rights and equal responsibilities. The democratic spirit encourages people to vote in elections and volunteer to help their country and their communities.
The Declaration of Independence embodies the democratic spirit with these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed . . ."
Abraham Lincoln expressed the democratic spirit in the Gettysburg Address: ". . . a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. . . ." and "government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth."
