My nine year old does not seem to understand when to use each kind of measurement, such as centimeter, meter, kilometer, foo, mile, and inches. My husband and I tried to explain but I think we confused her more. Do you have a suggestion or guideline to help her.

Visuals always worked for me during that age but in schools they expect us to learn from just words and descriptions alone. I just wished they taught that way all the time.

You could go and use a ruler at first to demonstrate the centimeter and inches, a meterstick could help with the meter. Then you could compare each and build from that's such as this many of one measurement equals another unit of measurement. I don't know what you mean by a foo however unless that's a typo.
