I still don't understand how you got those answers?drbob

how did you get 0.75 divided by 112.50?
can someone else help me understand?

#6 After an article is discounted at 25% it sells for $112.50. The original price of the article was? answer 150.00

#7 A plane left new york at 3:30 p.m. est and arrived in los angelas at 4:15 p.m. Pst. How long did the flight take?
I usually get these kinds of questions but with the time changes i don't get it. answer 3 hrs and 15 mins
my book has that answer on it but i agree with you.

To begin, I did work the problem an awkward way. I didn't know if you were into Xs and Ys so I tried another approach.
Let's let X = the original price.
Then it is discounted by 25% which is 0.25 (percent means out of 100, so divide 25% by 100 to obtain 0.25).
So we take the original price, X, and subtract from it 0.25X (the amount it is discounted) and the problem says the result is 112.50. We just make an equation out of that.

Original price - discount = 112.50
X - 0.25X = 112.50
1X - 0.25X = 112.50
1.00X - 0.25X = 112.50
0.75X = 112.50
X = 112.50/0.75 = 150 = original price.

Perhaps another tutor will look at #2 and see if they get the book answer.

The answer for # 7 is not 3 hours and 15 minutes.

When the plane leaves New York at 3:30 p.m., EST, it's 12:30 p.m., PST in Los Angeles. There's a 3-hour time difference.

It arrives in L.A. at 4:15 p.m., PST.

4:15 - 12:30 = 3 hours and 45 minutes

Thanks Ms. Sue. That's the same answer the student and I obtained in an earlier post.

Well, it seems like you and the student are in agreement on the first question. As for the second question, it's a bit of a timey-wimey situation. The plane left New York at 3:30 p.m. EST, but arrived in Los Angeles at 4:15 p.m. PST. So, there's a 3-hour time difference between the two cities. Therefore, the flight took 3 hours and 45 minutes, not 3 hours and 15 minutes. Time zones can be quite the headache sometimes!

To find the original price in question #6, we can use the equation:

Original price - discount = $112.50

Let's represent the original price as X. The discount is 25% of the original price, which can be written as 0.25X. Substituting these values into the equation:

X - 0.25X = $112.50

Simplifying, we get:

0.75X = $112.50

To solve for X, we divide both sides of the equation by 0.75:

X = $112.50 / 0.75

Using a calculator, we find that X = $150. Therefore, the original price of the article was $150.

Regarding question #7, the flight duration can be calculated using the time difference between New York and Los Angeles. The plane leaves New York at 3:30 p.m., EST, which corresponds to 12:30 p.m., PST in Los Angeles. The flight then arrives in Los Angeles at 4:15 p.m., PST.

To find the duration, we subtract the departure time from the arrival time:

4:15 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. = 3 hours and 45 minutes

So the flight took 3 hours and 45 minutes.

To get the answer for the division problem 0.75 divided by 112.50, you can follow these steps:

1. Take the numerator, 0.75, and place it above the division bar.
2. Take the denominator, 112.50, and place it below the division bar.
3. Begin dividing the numerator by the first digit of the denominator.
- Divide 0.75 by 1 (the first digit of 112.50). The result is 0.75.
4. Multiply the quotient obtained in the previous step (0.75) by 10 and place it below the remainder.
- Multiply 0.75 by 10 to get 7.5. Place 7.5 below the remainder.
5. Subtract the product obtained in the previous step (7.5) from the remainder.
- Subtract 7.5 from 75 (the remainder). The result is 67.5.
6. Bring down the next digit from the dividend (112.50) and place it next to the remainder obtained in the previous step.
- Bring down the digit 0 and place it next to 67.5.
7. Divide the new dividend (675) by the denominator (112.50).
- Divide 67.5 by 112.50. The result is 0.6.
8. Multiply the quotient obtained in the previous step (0.6) by 10 and place it below the remainder.
- Multiply 0.6 by 10 to get 6. Place 6 below the remainder.
9. Subtract the product obtained in the previous step (6) from the remainder.
- Subtract 6 from 75 (the remainder). The result is 9.
10. There are no more digits to bring down, so the division is complete.
11. The final quotient is 0.0067 (rounded to four decimal places).

Therefore, the answer to 0.75 divided by 112.50 is approximately 0.0067.

For the second question, the flight took 3 hours and 45 minutes. The time difference between New York (EST) and Los Angeles (PST) is 3 hours. The plane departed at 3:30 p.m. EST and arrived at 4:15 p.m. PST.

To calculate the duration of the flight, you start by converting the time to a common time zone. Since EST is ahead of PST by 3 hours, you subtract 3 hours from the arrival time.

4:15 p.m. PST - 3 hours = 1:15 p.m. PST

Then, you subtract the departure time from the converted arrival time:

1:15 p.m. PST - 3:30 p.m. EST = -2 hours and 15 minutes

Since the result is negative, it means the plane traveled back in time due to the time difference. In other words, the flight took 2 hours and 15 minutes less than 24 hours.

To find the actual duration, you subtract the result from 24 hours:

24 hours - 2 hours 15 minutes = 21 hours and 45 minutes

Therefore, the flight took 21 hours and 45 minutes.
