The age of a granite can be determined using radiometric dating. Explain the basis for a determination of a 238U-Pb radiometric date of 1120Ma for a granite.......HELP!!!

hi sounds like you are on the same course as me i was stuck on this so give this a go as this is what jiska helped me

u238 decays to Pb in a known rate so that knowing the ratio of Pb you can determine the time elapse since the U was placed in the sample of granite. This function is not inverse it is an expontential decay

I hope this helps

Thank you - yes on TMA08 of S103. Not enjoying it - thankfully it's nearly over.

yes i cant wait then i have got my 360
do you have any help for me on q1
please

This is the last course you are doing? It's one of my first, that's why i'm struggling. Which part of Q1?

how have you done the cross section is it like the one on p127 and what sketch have you got for schist, I have little grains smaller than sandstone is that right

many thanks

ps maybe we can help each other on part c of q1 that's if that's ok

Just an observation. Be careful what you ask here as S103 Tutors read this as well.

what steps do you think can be taken to reduce the harmful effects of human activities on biogeochemical cycles?

Hi Bex - think diagram on P127 is best bet, we'll talk on part c... Schist - I think (b) on page 46 - read paragraph 2 on page 46. . . .Cheers Desmond .... P.S - can't wait for ECA! Looks like so much fun - NOT!

The schist grains are supposed to bigger than the sandstones, try page 46 of block 10 for an example

The first major step to take would be to cut down on pollution. Human pollution has introduced elements into the cycle that nature was not prepared to handle. If we could cut down on burning fossil fuels, dumping oil and chemicals into our water system, and burying our waste, we could make a significant difference. Also with modern technology we could develop methods to clean and cut down on the amount of pollutants introduced into nature. Non chemical factors that have affected our environment include the massive agricultural impact we have and the over hunting and fishing that are throwing nature off balance. If we could also slow the rate of our farming practices, we could possibly give the earth more time to heal.

The types of business most affected by this would be oil refineries, large factories, gas companies, vehicle manufacturers, farmers, hunters, fisherman, and recycling companies. Aside from the recycling companies, all of the other businesses would take a big hit in profits because of the money it would take for them to cut down on the pollutants with safer practices. Although we continue to search for alternate methods of energy production, the results often yield something more costly or not efficient enough.

What are four states of matter

The four states of matter are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.

To determine the state of matter, you can observe the physical properties of the substance.

- A solid has a definite shape and volume. Its particles are closely packed and cannot move freely. Examples of solids include ice, wood, and metal.
- A liquid has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. Its particles are close together but can move and flow. Examples of liquids include water, oil, and milk.
- A gas has neither a definite shape nor volume. Its particles are far apart and move freely. Examples of gases include air, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.
- Plasma is a high-energy state of matter that occurs at extremely high temperatures or in the presence of a strong electric field. It is a collection of ions and electrons that are not bound together. Examples of plasma include lightning and the sun.

These states of matter can also undergo phase changes. For example, solid can melt to become a liquid, and liquid can evaporate to become a gas, etc.
