Are the commas a correctly placed?

1. The term hardware refers to the computing equipment, itself.

2. The year, 1975, marked the arrival of the microcomputer

Neither of those sentences needs any commas.

I cannot, since I haven't ever read that book, but there are excellent explanations of these literary terms in the following websites that should help you find them yourself:

The use of commas in the sentence you provided is correct. However, it seems like you are trying to demonstrate a different concept related to commas, which is the use of appositives. An appositive is a word or phrase that provides additional information about a noun or pronoun in a sentence. In this case, "Mr. Goss" is the appositive providing additional information about "mom."

The sentence can be rewritten without the appositive as: "Mr. Goss gave his daughter Sue a car for her graduation present." However, adding the appositive with commas provides emphasis or clarifies the relationship between "mom" and "Mr. Goss."
