All matter is made up of atoms. Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter, and they combine to form molecules and different types of substances. Different elements have different types of atoms, and the arrangement of these atoms gives each substance its unique properties. For example, water is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom, while carbon dioxide is made up of one carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms.
