This is one of the answers this question received on Oct. 15.

According to this Web site, Lincoln made that statement in a campaign circular in 1843.

That answer answers the when and why parts of your question. Since Lincoln was involved in Illinois politics for many years, obviously the campaign brochure was produced in Illinois, probably Springfield.

Why do you say these answers aren't very good?

I don't really know why he said it. Like, what was he promoting or talking about when he said it? How do we know a brochure was involved?

The website I quoted said that the quote appeared in a campaign circular. Please check the noun defintion for CIRCULAR in this site.

You've received several interpretations about the meaning of Lincoln's words. Please choose the meaning that you think is best.

How do we know for sure that that is the sort of CIRCULAR that the website was talking about?

To find out for sure if the website was referring to a campaign circular, you can try to find additional sources that provide more context about Abraham Lincoln's quote.

One way to do this is to search for primary sources such as letters, speeches, or campaign materials from Abraham Lincoln around the time when he supposedly made the statement. By examining these primary sources, you can gain a better understanding of the context in which the quote was said and possibly find more information about the campaign circular in question.

Another approach is to consult reputable biographies or historical accounts of Abraham Lincoln's life and political career. These sources often provide detailed explanations and analysis of significant events and statements made by Lincoln. They may mention the quote in question and provide further context or interpretation.

It's important to note that historical research often involves evaluating multiple sources and considering different perspectives. If you encounter conflicting information or interpretations, it's advisable to consult multiple sources and compare them to reach a well-rounded understanding.

Remember, the process of researching historical information involves examining credible sources, cross-referencing information, and making informed judgments based on the available evidence.
