Donna deposited some money into an account paying 8% per annum compund quartely. When she goes into the back 3 years later she discover that there is $1585.30 in her account what was the intial amount donna deposited.

I am going to use this formula:
a= p(1+i)^n
a=$1585.30
p= ?
i=8/4=2%
n=4X3= 12

$1585.30=p(1+0.02)^12
$1585.30 / (1+0.02)^12=p
p= $12500

so am I correct or am I wrong?
thanks in advance!

Nope.

How can there be 8 times as much at the start of three years? I think you misplaced a decimal. Otherwise, OK>

I don't follow!

Check your division. You can not start with 12 thousand dollars, and after three years, have fifteen hundred dollars.

I think you meant 1250.00 and you have 12500
That's what BobP's getting at here.

haha oops! thanks that was my fault!

Early Sunrise, Jessica was sitting at her study table gazing out the window, staring at the drizzling rain trying to figure out her Maths problem. She wished that her parents were still alive to support her.
Instead she had her grandma; unlike her parents she was too old and ill. Jessica was feeling anxious about her Maths homework, if she hadn’t done it; she knows that there would be severe consequences, as she was in the highest year of secondary school. “I hate Maths homework, I just don’t understand it, it’s too hard” whispered Jessica. Knock knock! Grandma walked inside Jessica’s room and said,
“Dear, it’s time to go to school” in a stutter voice.
“Yes grandma, I’m nearly ready” said Jessica as if she was hastening.
Jessica started to pack her bag for school, as soon as she felt pain scattering through her whole body, it was like a bomb inside of her, trying to explode. She didn’t know what was happening, the swift pain inside of her, plus she wasn’t to keen on it either. In a moment of time the pain disappeared and she was back to normal. Jessica thought to herself what’s going on? What’s happening to me?”
Jessica left her house looking scruffy, and holding her ripped umbrella above her black frizzy hair which extended up to her big chin. Jessica wasn’t the prettiest or the cleverest, everyone in her school described her as ‘Frizzy Big Chin’ especially one particular boy, Tommy Smith, Who always bullied Jessica.
As Jessica was walking in the direction of the school, her vision became worse due to all the rain droplets splashing on her big glasses, as the time went by she reached school all drenched, it was like a rain cloud, following her, every step of the way.
She walked on the way to her first class which was Maths, as she entered, she could see everyone’s heads turning, staring at her, she felt kind of embarrassed, and anyone would feel the same way! Looking so ugly and also not having done her Maths homework as always. She walked into the classroom with her head down and sat down and looked all blameless.
Jessica’s Maths teacher whose name was Mr Floss was very harsh, he always picked on Jessica because she wasn’t too bright and never did her homework. Jessica is always made to feel stupid because the Maths teacher always made her solve problems in front of the class, as a punishment.
Mr Floss started the register, saying “if you have your homework say yes, if you don’t say no, without an excuses please.” He carried on saying everyone’s name so far they had all replied “yes” but when it came to Jessica. “No sir I haven’t got my homework”
“Every time you walk into my class, it’s always the same, you come in without your homework, and this time you will have an hour’s detention, tonight”
From nowhere a paper aeroplane landed on her desk, a written note by someone, the note said “Shame, You dumb frizzy big chin, you’re so dumb” Jessica sat back on her chair in shame, and prayed to be someone more talented and good looking.
The school bell rang at the end of the day, so everyone grabbed their bags and rushed to go home except, Jessica who unfortunately has an hour’s detention. So she walked to her Maths detention, when she felt a feeling inside of her, it felt like blood rushing through her veins as fast as the speed of light. She had an urge to itch her head frantically, but she didn’t because others in the detention class was staring at her, if she did, she would of felt embarrassed and would be called ‘knit face’. Jessica asked Mr, Floss “Sir may I be excused to go to the bathroom? I’m not feeling well”
“Does it have to be now, can’t it wait”
“No sir, I can’t wait it is very urgent”
“Ok then you can go, but don’t be too long” As she was walking out of the classroom she thought to herself,
“What’s happening to me?” it was like a bomb blowing up internally, this was the same thing that happened to her before school.
Jessica was in pain, she took slow steps toward the bathroom. At first, Jessica cleansed her face, close to the runny tap, after three splashes of water on her face, she looked in the mirror, at first glimpse she thought it was nothing but then she looked at her hair, she couldn’t believe her eyes, her hair started to change colour. She tried to focus on the mirror, she couldn’t quite see herself clearly, so she took her glasses to clean, and noticed that she can see without her glasses, at this moment Jessica was very confused, she looked in the mirror and she can see; she looked all around the bathroom and she can see; she looked in the mirror again and saw her beautiful blond hair that shone in the light, She no longer had a big chin. At first glance she thought it was someone else, but there was no-one else present. She couldn’t believe her eyes, she looked absolutely stunning.
At this moment she didn’t know how to confront her teacher or anyone in fact, but with a big deep breath she walked towards her classroom feeling strong, confident and radiant as ever. “I look amazing, what will everyone think when they see me?”
Jessica decided to show her new appearance tomorrow at school. But for now she had to confront the teacher. She stood outside the classroom door, and turned the handle which opened the door she went back and sat on her seat, and all she saw was Mr Floss staring at her, he was speechless. Jessica’s time was up at detentions, and left waving her shiny blond her across her shoulders. Jessica was surprised that the teacher had never said anything since she changed. She went home all excited. She knocked on her house door; waiting for her grandma to open it, once she opened grandma said “who are you?”
“It’s me, Jessica, how do you I like my new look?” said Jessica happily
“Wow! Jessica you look gorgeous what happened to you at school!” said grandma.
“I will tell you later” said Jessica.
She came into her house and went to her bedroom, her dream had come to reality: and she had become from weird to wonderful. She was so excited: and also bored so she decided to tidy up her bedroom and she found a bottle of lotion that she used that morning before school. Jessica read the small print just to test her eye sight, on the print it said, this can cause a permanent symptoms of a body change. Jessica had found the cause of what she is going through. “It was all to do with a lotion bottle?” said Jessica in shock. On the other hand she was glad. Jessica went downstairs and explained all that happened to her, to her grandma, but grandma couldn’t believe it. It was late at night and Jessica went into bed, amazingly with her school bag packed and all homework completed.
Next morning, she got ready for school, looking all wonderful. On the way to school people were staring at her, but this time it was a different look. Everyone fancied her, she could tell by the look in their eyes. She had Maths as her first lesson; she wasn’t too bothered or scared this time round. She walked into her Maths class and she could hear people whispering, saying “who is she? She looks beautiful” Jessica sat on her seat. The boy who had always bullied her said
“You’re sitting on the wrong seat, that’s frizzy big chin’s seat, why don’t you come and have a seat next to me”
“I am that frizzy big chin” said Jessica with confidence. Everyone in the class laughed constantly. “If you are Jessica, where is your dark hair, big chin and geeky glasses” she took her glasses out of her pocket and threw it on the floor and the lens shattered, she then said “I don’t need these glasses anymore, I am the new Jessica”
Mr Floss interrupted and said “what is going on here?”
“I am not dumb anymore” said Jessica
“If you think you’ve changed overnight dumbo, workout the equation written on the board” said Tommy
She looked at the board with one glimpse and turned around, at this point the intensity in the class was so high, everyone knew Jessica was thick but they were still anxious that she can give out the right answer. She stared in Tommy’s eyes giving him a confident look. She read out the answer “5832.25 not forgetting the two decimal place, sir”. Mr Floss pulled out a calculator to see if she was correct, and to his and the classes amazement she was correct and Tommy’s jaw dropped, to the ground in shock.
The school bell had ringed, she walked back from school feeling, delighted, wonderful and intelligent. She was the happiest and luckiest person in the world, at first she was weird and now she is wonderful.
