Homework Help: Social Studies: World Issues: Racism
by Emily McPherson
Each year, around 22,000 people from Asian countries are given residence
permits to live in New Zealand. Upon arrival in New Zealand, many
become victims of subtle racial prejudice and government restrictions.
Because of this up to half of Asians are thinking of leaving.
One of the reasons the public may be anti-Asian, is that some migrants
come from China as 'asylum seeking refugees'. This is a policy that
both NZ and the US have to "allow Chinese women to apply for residence
on the basis that their violation of the one child policy means that
they face persecution on the ground of political opinion" (source: Dept.
of Immigration). Because of this, the general public may feel that all
Asians are coming to NZ to avoid punishment in their own country and it
is unfair.
In most cases, this is not true, as many migrants were discontent with
the substantial drop in income after moving to NZ. If these migrants had
come from China, they would glad that they were even paid a salary.
Overall, I believe that individuals do not hold private prejudice
against Asians, and they feel that immigrants are good for the economy.
Yet, on a whole, the community and government have many racial tensions
that need to be addressed before they become out of hand.
