Homework Help: Social Studies: World Issues: Death Penalty - An Option

by Paul Waterman

This subject has fascinated me for several years, from seeing the film 'Dead Man Walking' starring Susan Sarandon, to the wrongly hung Timothy Evans who was executed towards the end of the 1940's

There is no simple answer:- There are moral issues to consider, however, I feel that in so many cases the rights of the murderer outweigh the snuffed out rights of the murdered. One case that has been highlighted was the case of Sean Sellars (u.s.a) who was 16 years old when he murdered in cold blood a garage attendant (to see how it felt) he then shot his mother and step father whilst they slept. He remained on death row until February 1999 he was then in his late 20's when his appeals for clemency were denied and he was executed by lethal injection. The news reports were saying that he was the first 16yr old to be sentenced to death in 40 years.

The rules are simple. Any person who takes a life should, in my opinion, forfeit their own. If the murderer is aware of what they are doing and know the difference between right and wrong and it is premeditated, why should they live in a civilised society??? As a parent of two children I cannot imagine the pain being suffered by the parents of Holly Wells (14) and Jessica Chapman (13) who were murdered by a perverted school caretaker Ian Huntley. He is behind bars and I can only hope that the 'system' will get him, i.e other inmates who despise scum that prey on children.

I could quite easily press the button to end Ian Huntley's life on this earth. Some people say "what if you make a mistake?" with the advances of D.N.A there is, unlike before, real 100% proof - D.N.A does not lie. Instead he will live on our tax payers expense for the rest of his life. Some people argue that the death sentence is not painful enough. My view is that if someone is executed they have paid the ultimate price they have forfeited their right to live. Steven Sellars asked everybody a question - Is there anything anyone can do to repair the damage that they have caused?. The answer is simple No- you cannot bring back a snuffed life, you can feel that justice has been done if you know that the evil murderer will never be released and that they are removed from this world. There have been cases where murderers have been released, only to murder again - so please, no calls for parole or rehabilitation. I strongly believe that where life is taken 'on the spur of the moment' or in crimes of passion then these types of cases should be treated entirely differently. It's the cold blooded premeditated murderer that should forfeit his/her life. I was so happy when Myra Hindley (uk) died, I can't wait for Ian Brady (uk) Peter Sutcliffe (uk) and so many others like them who have become notorious because of their evil ways.
