Homework Help: Social Studies: World Issues: Death Penalty

by Davidson Chan

A. Is Death Penalty justified to the judicial system in modern world? Why? Illustrate and elaborate it (30 mins and at least 150 words. MELAB- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery- composition. I just make the title by myself. I needs to reach 83 level - near English native user level)

Capital punishment has been used as a very harsh and ancient punishment since the beginning of human history. Some say that death penalty is good and effective but I think the otherwise. It is quite barbaric and horrible and it should be ban for a long time. I will discuss the topic in the following paragraph.

Some people regards the death punishment is the most effective and economic means to deter serious crime and killing. In a lot of developing countries, the governments simply use death punishment so often to punish those non-violent offenders. For instance, China always executes those corrupted officials and economic criminals. Some think that death sentence for murders bring final justice back to the victims. The ancient people liked to use such theory of a stone for a stone, an eye for eye and thus death to the murders are very logical. Only death sentence for the murderer would ease the families of the murdered victims. It is real justice.

However, I don't think so. Use a killing as a way to stop another killing will not work and is not acceptable. How would be pass the message to our younger by showing that this good killing (the death punishment) is a good mean to deter that bad killing (the murder)? I don't buy this idea. It only carries a wrong message that a wrong thing would be rectified by another wrong thing (a revenge). Get real; two negatives do not bring a positive. We always hear that some people are wrongly jailed and wrongly sentenced by wrong evidence. The recent tests found out that some inmates are not the murderers after 10 to 20-year imprisonment later. They are proved to be innocent by the new technology. Police would make mistakes and the judges would make too. Therefore, if we had used death punishment in those wrongful cases, it is no way to reverse the verdict from a death sentence after execution.

To sum up, I think the death penalty is uncivilized and dangerous to our justice system. Revenge will not stop revenge itself. Rehabilitation is the most important objective for the correction services. Death penalty should be terminated from our justice system.

B. What is the most memorable thing in your life? Explain how, what and why?

There were many uncommon things happened in my life so far and many of them were very memorable. However, if I have to choose one out of them to write, I will choose an accident, which happened to me when I was nine years ago that I was hit and run by a car. I found terror, fear, love, assistance, the good things and the bad things all mixed together in once accident.

I still remember that day was a heavy rainy morning and I was nine years old and a grade four student in Hong Kong. Like every usual day, I had to ride a bus to the elementary school, which was around three miles away from my home. I was in a hurry on that day and I crossed the road by jay walking. I might have sprinted to the bus stop regardless of the busy traffic. Many cars drove very fast and I was hit by a car, which I was unaware of its size and license plate. I was bleeding on the road but the involved car did not stop but hit and run. I was seriously hurt but not life threatening. I found other good Samaritan pedestrians rushed in to help me. Some drivers also stopped their cars aside to help. Some ladies came to hug and comfort me. I didn't cry but shocked and stunted by the unexpected accident. Although I was conscious but I was unable to move my body. I was so frightened and thought that I might have been crippled for life by the accident. I kept my! finger crossed that I wouldn't.

The driver that hit me was a bad, coward and irresponsible driver. However, the volunteers and the good Samaritans are good guys and angels to me. I saw ambulance and paramedical personnel came to give me first aid. I felt hope, confidence and love again.

I was rushed to the hospital but I was finally fainted out before arrival. When I woke up, I found myself were tightly tired by medical hangers. I thanked for all the people who had saved my life. I took three month to recover from my major wound and bone fractures. I was so lucky to have a good therapist to take care of me. From that accident, I determined to be a social worker when I grew up to that I would help other people in return for their gratitude.

This is a very memorable thing for me as I was recovered from a crippled handicapped boy back to a normal man after several-year on and off hospital/medical treatment. The accident almost killed me and it is a matter or life to me. It changed my attitude to a positive and community helper. Therefore this incident is a most memorable thing to me.
