Homework Help: Social Studies: World Issues: Abortion
by Melissa Amador
Over the past ten years the abortion rate in the United States have decreased.
According to the Alan Guttmasher Institute the abortion rate for woman aged
15-19 has dropped approximately 14 % over the past ten years. While the abortion
rate has declined some people feel that it is still a big problem. They argue
that abortion is killing a human being and it should be illegal. On the other
side people argue that abortion should remain legal and that people should be
able to chose for themselves. As everyone knows teen abortion is not a new
issue. However, the question still remains should abortion be legal or illegal?
The fact that teen abortion rates have been so high, shows that it’s a big
problem in our society. The people that are against abortion feel that it is
killing a human being. They feel that we should no longer ignore the scientific
evidence that life begins at the moment of conception or between the 18th-20th
day of pregnancy. Abortion stops the beating of an innocents child’s heart. Mrs.
Amador explains herself as she says, "Abortion is wrong because God is he who
gives life to all, and no human being on earth has the right to destroy
something God has created." While teenage pregnancy may always be a problem in
our society many people still feel abortion is not the answer.
While other people recognize that abortion is still a problem they think it
should remain legal. They feel that abortion is not necessarily killing a life.
According to Brian Elroy McKinley abortion It's murder if it's not an
independent person, it depends on the mother. Many people think that woman
should have the right to decide if they are ready to handle parenthood. In some
cases the woman does not have control over the situation. When speaking with my
cousin she said, "I think abortion should be legal. I mean come on what if an 11
year old girl got raped and could not have an abortion sure she could adopt, but
having 9 months of carrying around a child would be so much pain at 11. What
would her life be like remembering how she had a baby at 11?" Some people think
that the pregnant woman should be able to decide. Although abortion is still a
problem in the United States those people who are pro-choice feel that we do not
have the right to judge what others do.
The issue of abortion is very controversial, because not everyone thinks the
same. It all depends on your look and point of view on the topic. The people who
are pro-life feel that abortions are killing a human life. Those people that are
pro-choice are not necessarily pro-abortion, but they still think it’s a womens
personal choice. The fact that people have different opinions shows that it’s
hard to have a perfect or anonymous decision that will please everyone.
