Homework Help: Social Studies: World History: Crusades
by Claire Hairrell
The Crusaders were Christian men brought together be the pope.
Crusaders were people (Christians) who were on an expedition to bring
Christianity to city, land, town, village anywhere they went they brought
Christianity with them. These particular Crusaders wanted to save the "Holy
Land" from the Franks. The first part of the first crusade was quite disastrous.
The first group of men had no experience with fighting, and they also had no
supplies. Somehow they became more willing to go in fact on their way to the
"Holy Land" they attacked and even burned a lot of towns they traveled through.
King Louis of France and King Conrad of Germany were the leaders of the second
group of men who went on the first crusade. This group was a little more
successful; they captured many cities from the Turks on their way to the "Holy
Land." One problem was that the Kings were having disagreements and the men were
going hungry and getting sick then dying, but none of that mattered to them as
long as they one the battle!
In the end they had beaten the Turks, and they had made the "Holy Land" a
kingdom in Jerusalem in the year 1099!
The Crusaders ruled over the "Holy Land" for eighty-eight years.
Until a Muslim leader Saladin, took over the "Holy Land" in the year 1187.
That is when Richard the Lion-Hearted of England, Fredrick Barbarossa of
Germany and Philip Augustus of France and their armies started the third
crusade, so that they could attempt to win back the "Holy Land." Not Many
Germans made it to the "Holy Land" but the French and the English made sure that
they got there. The other leaders got upset with Philip Augustus and sent him
and his army back to Europe. The Muslims still had control over most of
Jerusalem, but King Richard mad a treaty with Saladin saying that
Christian pilgrims could go through Jerusalem peacefully.
There also what people call a "Children’s Crusade" this was when thousands of
French and German children decided that they wanted to go t the "Holy Land" too,
and so they did. Few children ever cam home because they had either been killed
or been sold as slaves.
I think Crusade’s are wrong. You should not force people to become Christians,
or threaten to hurt or even kill them if they don’t become a Christian. It is
good to tell people about how God sent Jesus to die for us and all the other
great things he has done but you should not force people into something.
