How are you? I miss you. I'm not so good, the conditions here are harsh. I hope you had a Merry Christmas. We did not have a good Christmas. All I ate was a fire cake (which is just flour and water mixed into a batter fried on a griddle) and cold water.

The first thing we had to do was to build huts. The huts are not that great. Each one is 16x14 foot log hut each one has a stone fireplace. The walls are 6 feet high and the roof is made out of wooden board. Plus they are built 2 feet underground with dirt floors some have cloth over the doorway. The huts are damp, smokey, and drafty. 12 men share 1 log hut.

The winter here is harsh, the temp. stayed in the 20's and 30's. There is a lot of snow and rain these days. A lot of people got sick and died. A lot of hospitals were set up. The Army's medical centers used at least 50 churches, barns, and meetinghouses etc. through E. Pennsylvania. They all didn't have much medical supplies.

The first military hospital was built in Yellow Springs. About 300 soldiers went there. People say that Gorge Washington is a failure because so many soldiers are either sick or poorly taken care of. Finally Gorge Washington made orders that the soldiers that relived themselves anywhere but in a proper necessary are to receive five lashes. He also noticed that the huts were terribly congested so he ordered windows to be cut.

Things are starting to get better. Christopher Ludwig, a gingerbread baker, arrived at camp. Now we’re getting a daily pound of bread, Ludwig bakes it himself . There is schools of shad that we trapped in nets.

Good news! I'm coming home. Philadelphia is to hard to defend for the British because there could be an attack from the sea. There was no battle fought but everyone deep inside knows that all the ill soldiers in Pennsylvania were no match for the Brittish even though it was them that backed out.
