Homework Help: Social Studies: U.S. History: The Cotton Gin
The cotton gin, created by Eli Whitney along with his partner Phineas
Miller, was an extraordinary invention. Created around 1793, it
revolutionized the cotton industry and brought many riches to plantation
owners. Whitney's invention was important for several reasons. At first,
seeds, hulls, and other unwanted materials from cotton would have to be
removed by hand. When Whitney's invention came out, this process could be
done much faster and save a tremendous amount of time. The cotton gin not
only saved time, but it also saved money. It wq a new and improved way to
clean the cotton from seeds. It was a great and affordable advantage to
farmers. Whitney's cotton gin has greatly affected us today. If he had
not invented it, maybe we would still be removing the seeds from the cotton
by hand, and as we all know, 's society probably wouldn't spend all of that
time on a small amount of cotton. We are used to getting things done
quicker. Whitney was an intelligent and determined man, and we owe all of
today's cotton industry success to him. Without the cotton gin, our economy
would not be as advanced as it is today.
