Homework Help: Social Studies: U.S. History: Colonial Clothing
by Erica Walters
In colonial America, the clothing one wore depended on their place in
society and their gender. Men had much more comfortable clothing than
women, who had to wear very long skirts and worst of all, tight fitting
corsets to make their waists tiny and fashionable. These corsets were
so tight, that most women had broken ribs and displaced vital organs!
Over that, women wore many petticoats to make their skirts full, and
pockets fastened to a strip of cloth tied around their waist. There were
slits in their dresses to reach into their pockets, instead of pockets
directly in the dress!
Men only had to wear breeches, (pants to the knee,) linen shirts,
long overcoats, and knee socks with heavy shoes. The most fashionable
men also wore wigs that they often powdered white.
