The country of Romania is situated in southeastern Europe. Romania
borders the Black Sea and it is located between Bulgaria and the
Ukraine. The capital of Romania is the city of Bucharest. The total area
of Romania is 237,500 square km and it has a population of 22,463,077
from the year of 1997. Their money that they use is called Bani. We call
people that live in Romania; Romanians. There are several ethnic groups
that live in the country of Romania which include Hungarians, Germans,
Ukrainians, Serbs, Croats, Russians, Turks and Gypsies. Most people are
Romanian Orthodox but some people are Roman Catholic or Protestant.
Romanians speak either Romanian, Hungarian, and/or German.
The country of Romania is cold and they live through cloudy winters
with snow and fog. Romanians experience frequent rain showers and
thunderstorms in the summer. Romania has a variety of different terrain
like the central Transylvanian Basin which is separate from the plain of
Moldavia on the eat by the Carpathian Mountains which is separated from
the Walachian Plain on the south by the Transylvanian Alps. Their
current environmental issues consist of soil erosion and deration, water
pollution, air pollution from industrial effluents and the contamination
of the Danube delta wetlands. They also receive earthquakes mostly in
the south and southwest and experience landslides which is caused by the
climate.
Romania's natural resources include petroleum, timber, natural gas,
coal, iron, ore and salt. They export textiles, footwear (25.2%), metals
and metal products (19.4%), fuels and mineral products (10%) and certain
chemicals (9.4%). They export their commodities to Germany mostly but
also to Italy, France, Turkey, Netherlands and china. The total value of
exports is 7.7 billion dollars each year. Romania also imports certain
commodities like fuels and minerals, machinery and transport equipment,
food, agricultural goods and chemicals. Romania imports from certain
countries like Germany, Italy, Russia, France, US and Egypt. The total
value of imports costs around 93.8 billion dollars.
Romania has a rich agricultural system. The products that they produce
are: wheat, corn, sugar, beets, sunflowers seeds, potatoes, grapes,
milk, eggs and meat. Heroin and cocaine are illegal drugs in Romania.
Romania has a very small population growth rate with a percentage of
-0.28% according to a 1997 survey. Their birth rate is 9.8 births/1,000
which is also a small rate. Their death rate is 11.75 deaths/1,000
population. Surprisingly, Romania's infant mortality rate is high with
19.6 deaths/1,000 births.
