I've always been good with words and picked up new vocabulary easily. As a late teenager, I learned that people thought I was smarter than I thought I really was because of my wide vocabulary. So then I made a conscious effort to appear smart by using an educated vocabulary.

Vocabulary implies the meanings of the word. Phonics, of course, is important in the pronunciation of words. But it's also necessary that students understand the meanings of new words. This is usually taught in context with reading assignments.
