Homework Help: Science: Chemistry: Atoms
An atom, by definition, is the smallest unit of a chemical element. They are so small that 100 million of them, side by side, would measure only 1 centimeter. As you may or may not know, atoms are still made up of smaller parts called subatomic particles.
Just like cells, all atoms contain a nucleus, and each nucleus holds two types of subatomic particles called protons and neutrons. Protons carry positive charges while neutrons carry no charge. Outside the nucleus but within the atom are more subatomic particles called electrons. Electrons orbit around the nucleus on a path called the orbital. Electrons carry a negative charge.
Many atoms can be used to create useful substances, but most are harmful. Be sure to use caution when experimenting with real atoms.
