A calculator is a device used to perform calculations. Calculations are the process of transforming one or more inputs into one or more results. The first calculators were called abacuses. Abacuses were made of wooden frames with strings with beads on them. They were in use for hundreds of years before the written Arabic numerals. Many merchants still use them in China and other countries.
The "Calculating Clock" was built by Wilhelm Schickard in 1623; it was the first automatic calculator. G.W.V. Leibniz made a calculating machine. During the 19th century all calculator were large cumbersome mechanical devices. Calculators were the precursors to the modern programmable computer.
Modern calculators consist of the following:
- Power source
- Display
- Keypad
- Electronic circuits
Calculators are now commonplace, they can be found in cell phones and pagers. Students use calculator’s regularly in the classroom. Teachers have debated over the prospers use and amount that calculators should play in the classroom.
TI-83 or TI-83 plus or the most commonly used calculators by high school students. Many graphing options make it the choice for U.S. algebra and calculus students across the country. Parents use calculators as much as students. Teachers allow calculators in the classroom.
