South America's total population was 515,000,000 and the world's total population was 6,279,000,000. What percentage was South America rounded to the nearest tenth?

515,000,000/6,279,000,000

Dont get intimidated by large numbers. Plug that into a calculator to find the answer. I don't know if that number fits into a calculator to be honest.

it does it turns out: 1.8458...

My calculator says 0.08

Which rounds to .1

you're right...i forgot the '6' in the '6279000000' sry

Chopsticks -- you forgot to convert your answer to a percent.

Oh.

.1 = 10%

shouldn't you convert .08?

The problem states to the nearest tenth.

8.2%

Ms.Sue's right

Oh dang sorry haha. I converted it to the nearest tenth when I saw .08, I forgot about the percentage in tenths.

Sounds as if Chopsticks needs to leave the math helping to the math tutors who don't forget these things ... so that other students don't go away with the wrong process and/or answers.
