Homework Help: Physical Education: Sports: Sprinting

by Emily McPherson

On your marks!
Set!
BANG!

This is what you will hear at the start of any race, hence, you need to know what to do.

on your marks: Crouch or stand as close to the starting line as possible (but donŐt touch the line). Be relaxed and leaning slightly forward.

set: Concentrate on what you must do when you start running. If you are in a crouch position lift you back-side into the air and stretch legs. Keep still once in a comfortable position.

bang: Push hard with your back legs and swings arms. Keep your body low for the first few strides. Starting early is called a false start.

Try to run fairly upright without leaning forward too much. Keep your eyes looking beyond the finish line at all times. Lift your knees up high, but do not over-stride. Drive with your arms: ÔThe faster the arms, the faster the legs.Ő

No matter how far you have run, you finish a race when your body (not arms) crosses the finishing line. At the end of the race, keep running at full speed over the finish line. Make sure that you donŐt get overtaken at the end. It is okay to run about 10m over the line before stopping.

sprint: races from 60m (indoor) to 400m in length.

false start: when someone starts running before the gun goes off; if this happens to a competitor three times, they will not be allowed to race.

over-stride: taking running steps that are too long and high.
