Homework Help: Physical Education: Sports: Shot Put

by Emily McPherson

The most efficient way to through a heavy object is to put it. What this means is pushing it from above your shoulder.

Strategies include:

  1. Hold the shot with one hand close to your chin. Never let the ball get any lower than chin level.
  2. The shot is put from a concrete circle. If you step outside the circle boundaries the shot will not be measured.
  3. The most common way of throwing the shot is to stand with your back facing the throwing direction, and whirl around and push the shot off. However, this method is for professionals.

The easiest ways for a beginner to "put a shot" would be to stand side on to the throwing area. Hold the ball at ear level, with the elbow in front of the body. The non throwing hand should be stretched out towards the throwing area. Twist body around forwards, keeping the elbow behind the shot. Then extend palm of hand forward and "put" the shot.

"Explode with sheer strength, pushing with the legs, to impart maximum velocity to the shot."

The shot- A smooth round heavy ball for throwing; shaped like a cannon ball.
