Homework Help: Mathematics: Algebra: Variations
Leo Galleguillos
The two most common types of variations in graphs are called direct variations and inverse variations. In both variations, y is given in terms of x. In direct variations, x is always multiplied by a number to get y. On the other hand, in inverse variations, x is always divided by a number to get y.
Direct variations can be written as y = kx where k is the constant of variation. Inverse variations can be written as y = k/x. Here are some examples of direct-variation and inverse-variation formulas:
Direct Variation Formulas
y = kx y varies directly as x |
| k > 0 |
k < 0 |
 |
|
 |
y = kx2 y varies directly as the square of x |
| k > 0 |
k < 0 |
 |

Inverse Variation Formulas
y = k/x y varies inversely as x |
| k > 0 |
k < 0 |
 |
|
 |
y = k/(x2) y varies inversely as the square of x |
| k > 0 |
k < 0 |
