Homework Help: Home Economics: Cooking: Setting a Table
A cover is the amount of space allowed per person at the table. This is usually twenty to thirty inches. It is not the same thing as a tablecloth or place mat.
The dish is placed in the center of the cover one inch from the edge of the table.
The silver is placed beside the place one inch from the edge of the table. Lay it close to the plate but do not crowd.
- Knife - to the right of the plate, sharp edge toward the plate
- Spoon - to the right of the knife
- Fork - tines up, to the left of the plate
- All silver is arranged in the order of which it is used, from the outside in.
The glass is placed at the tip of the knife and slightly to the right.
The beverage cup (hot) is placed at the right of the spoons, handle should be parallel to the edge of the table, center of the cup even with the center of the plate.
TABLE SERVICE (RULES FOR WAITING ON TABLES)
Food - left
Drink - right
- Food dishes and soiled dishes from the previous course are removed before the next course is served.
- Service is done in a counterclockwise manner.
- Place and remove all dishes to the left of the individual.
- The beverage is placed and removed to the right of the individual.
- One NEVER reaches in front of a guest.
