Definition of Nutrition

by Leo Galleguillos

Nutrition, by definition, is the way our bodies take in and use food. Foods that are great sources of nutrition are called nutrients. There are six different types of nutrients:

  1. carbohydrates
  2. fats
  3. proteins
  4. vitamins
  5. minerals
  6. water

Nutrients give us energy, growth, help repair body tissues, and regulate body functions. Therefore each nutrient can be vital to your health.

You need energy for all activities, including riding a bike, taking a test in school, or sleeping. The energy we use can also be called calories. A calorie, by definition, is a measure of energy content in one or more foods. The more calories you eat, the more energy you will have.
