Homework Help: Health: Environment Safety: Fun in the Sun

by Emily McPherson

Most people enjoy spending time in the sun as it is a national way of life and a legacy of our beautiful summer climate. But, in recent years we have become aware of the price we pay to worship the sun; so during summer, most people wear sunblock, sunglasses, and hats. Unfortunately, during winter, few people are sufficiently conscious of protecting themselves from U.V. rays. There is a need to recognize that skin damage can still occur during the colder seasons, even if the effects are not so obvious.

Wearing sunblock during winter, is still a necessity, especially in countries where the hole in the ozone layer is becoming bigger (like those around the south pole e.g. Australia and NZ).

Wear sunglasses that absorb 99-100% of the full U.V. spectrum when outdoors in bright sunlight. The lens color is not directly related to sunglassesŐ U.V. filtering ability. A hat with a wide brim protects bees.

Even on cloudy days, some of the sunŐs harmful rays reach the ground. Sand, water, snow, and concrete and other shiny surfaces reflect additional sunlight. Babies should be kept out of direct sunlight.

A sun tan is really a response to sun damage.. the outer layer becomes thicker and darker in an effort to provide a better barrier against the sun and the skin tans. Even with this natural protection, the barrier can still be penetrated. Essential to prevent damage of deeper layers of skin.

In the southern hemisphere maximum levels occur around December 21. Minimum occurs around June 21 and is 20% of the maximum level. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the other way around.
