Homework Help: English: Writing: History of Newspapers

In the way of circulation Julius started the first newspaper, 'Acta Diurna' which translates to daily event, published in 60bc. due to the fact that it contained marriages, deaths, military appointments and announcements, this led them to the conclusion of them being hung in public places. Tsing Pao was one of the earlier papers, published in Peking AD 500. Technology was limited back then so the events were carved onto block. At this stage they hadn't started to inform the public of important events, this came at a later date.

In England news was first printed on pamphlets or in books. These newspapers were often published after an important event, such as the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Things started to improve with the invention of printing helping to move things along a bit. This led to the first commercial newspaper 'Stratsburg Relation' in Germany 1609. Printing was spread through out the world and was on its way to Australia.

'Sydney Gazette' being the first australian newspaper was published from 1803-1842. When the first issue was published only 100 copies were printed, which had four small three column pages. When all of the australian newspapers started they were only weeklies before becoming dailies. In forty years it went form eleven dailies to forty eight. Today newspapers are published and read all over the world.
