Homework Help: English: Books, Novels & Plays: In The Heat of The Night

by Jennifer Walsh

In the book "In the Heat of the Night", there are many people that are suspicious or could be a suspect in the murder of Mantoli. For example Virgil Tibbs was being very defensive and quick to answer when he was being interviewed. His alibi for being at the train station at the time of the murder could of easily been made up. His motive could be for anything maybe he has something against him or maybe he's just a killer. I don't think he is the killer though. Another suspect is Harvy Oberst, he seemed very calm and shrewd when he was being interviewed. He took the mans wallet so obviously he was at the scene of the crime and just left without calling the police, maybe he has something to hide. His motive could be that he saw a helpless lonely man walking and he jumped him for his money and left and killed him at the same time. The final suspect is Sam Woods, he always has the right questions, maybe he was the one who killed Mantoli and just came after and let people find him so the heat was off him and is questioning them to take the picture away from being around him. His motive might be that this man is quite popular around town and Sam thinks he should be the main man of the town so maybe he killed him to get the spotlight on the big man who catches the guy who kills him. I don't know who the real killer is at this moment I think he will come alone farther along in the book.
