Holes is about the life of Stanley Yelnats, who is a boy which is cursed. it is an exciting, adventurous book with a twisted sense of humour.

Holes takes place in a court room. Where his future is decided by a grizzly judge, he gives him a choice either gaol or Camp Green Lake. But why is he in the court room to begin with, he hasn't done anything wrong, well at least not that he knows of. He chooses the exciting Camp Green Lake, he would soon find out the irony behind this rather misleading name.

Holes is written from the third persons point of view.

Zero, a boy at the camp is related to Madame Zeroni, a lady that cursed Stanley's family many generations ago. He has inherited her mystical powers. There are lots of othjer boys at the camp that come from all different backgrounds, Stanley was rather plump and emotionally unstable before he went to camp green lake. After he left camp green lake he had been transformed into a person that was fit and had confidence in himself and others. The authority figures were the Warden, Mr Sir and Mr Pendanski. The Warden is a cruel lady who makes the boys dig a hole a day so she could find Kissing Kate Barlows treasure and has a strange idea that snake venom makes good nail polish. Mr Sir is a man that works for the warden and he is rather mean to Stanley by denying him water. Mr Pendanski is the councillor of Stanley's group at camp and was sometimes reffered to as mum by some of the boys. The warden would have to be the main villian of the story. Katherine Barlow was in love with Sam, who was an american negro. He is hanged because they were caught kissing and back then it was illegal for a negro to kiss another race.

In holes Loius Sachar has interwined three different stories into one. A curse a love story take part in the twisting story stanley and his families burden of the curse of madame zeroni. It is solved as each of these different stories fill in their own holes and mysteries, with a few unexpected quirks along the way.
