Kindey stones are very painful what prevention method can you use from developing them?

A doctor in a hospital emergency room told my husband there was no way to avoid kidney stones.

However, I think Mayo Clinic has a better answer.

To prevent the development of kidney stones, there are several lifestyle changes and prevention methods you can follow:

1. Stay hydrated: Dehydration is a common risk factor for kidney stone formation. Drinking an adequate amount of water helps dilute urine and prevents the concentration of minerals and salts that form stones. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.

2. Maintain a balanced diet: Limit foods high in oxalate, such as spinach, rhubarb, beets, nuts, and chocolate. Reduce sodium intake and avoid excessive consumption of animal protein. Include foods rich in calcium, like milk, yogurt, and cheese, but do not take calcium supplements without medical advice.

3. Moderation in salt and sugar: Excessive intake of sodium (salt) can lead to increased calcium levels in the urine, a common risk factor for kidney stones. Similarly, a high sugar intake may increase the risk of stone formation. Limit your consumption of processed foods, canned soups, fast foods, and sugary beverages.

4. Increase citrus intake: Citric acid found in lemons, oranges, lime, and grapefruit can help prevent stone formation. Citric acid binds to calcium in the urine, reducing the risk of kidney stone formation. Drinking citrus juices or adding lemon or lime slices to your water can be beneficial.

5. Limit soft drinks and caffeine: Certain studies have linked the consumption of sugary soft drinks and caffeinated beverages to an increased risk of kidney stone formation. Limit the intake of these drinks or replace them with healthier alternatives like herbal teas or water.

6. Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and promotes overall well-being. It may also reduce the risk of developing kidney stones. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, most days of the week.

7. Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of kidney stone formation. By adopting a healthy eating plan and engaging in regular physical activity, you can maintain a healthy weight and reduce your risk.

8. Avoid excessive vitamin C supplementation: Very high doses of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) may be associated with an increased risk of kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals. Stick to the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin C, which is around 75-90 mg per day for adults.

It's important to note that the appropriateness of these prevention measures may vary depending on an individual's specific health condition or risk factors. It's always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
