What do the Sanjuaneros do outside the house?
Los Sanjuaneros arrive outside the Narces home very excited, they are yelling with excitement to see if anyone is home. They have come to the home looking to see what the Narces family will give for the celebration and the bonfire. Los Sanjuaneros have gone from house to house looking for wood to burn in the bonfire during the celebration. Telva tells los San Juaneros that a cart full of gorse is waiting for them in the stockyard. La Juanera numero dos is excited for this, she says gorse is the best for bonfires because it makes the flames of the fire very red and makes sounds of castanets when it burns. Los Juaneros continue to talk with Telva about some of the other things they have done to prepare for the celebration, to enable their wishes to come true and so that miracles will occur. Los Sanjuaneros are also searching the fields for four-leaf clovers. As the carriage is ready to leave, Telva goes with los Juaneros to the celebration.

La Peregrina told Adela that always she hears “love’s desperate last words” and those were the same words that Adela was saying to herself. Because Adela did not understand that she was in love with Martín and she had mixed emotions and was confused, Adela thought about ending her life.

Though the grandfather remains cautious, it appears that through the gradual growth of trust, the grandfather and La Peregrina may have developed a friendship with each other. La Peregrina explains to the grandfather that she has returned for a woman of his household, La Peregrina then told the grandfather not to worry about Adela or the children, because she had returned for someone who the family already had mourned. Because of the small amount of trust that the grandfather has gained, he decides to listen to La Peregrina and leaves the house to attend the celebrations for the feast of St. Juan.
Cuando La Peregrina vuelve el abuelo se mantiene cauteloso de su presencia. Sin embargo, la relación entre el abuelo y La Peregrina se ha desarrollado con un poco más de confianza y comprensión.
