A couple of people have asked this question before, but I still do not understand.

Highest/Lowest elevation for Long Beach = 360 feet and -7 feet

Highest/Lowest elevation for New Orleans = 25 feet and -8 feet

One of the cities has an average elevation of about 2 feet below sea level. Which city is it?

LB: (360-7)/2

NO: (25-8)/2

Even without doing the actual math, just seeing that much of LB is quite high should make things clear.

Now, neither of those averages is -2, but surely NO has a better chance of being near that.

What that means is that while the mean of high and low for NO is 8.5, if there is a lot more land below sea level than above, the average could be -2.

To determine which city has an average elevation of about 2 feet below sea level, we can calculate the average elevation for each city using the highest and lowest elevations given.

For Long Beach:
Highest elevation: 360 feet
Lowest elevation: -7 feet

To find the average elevation, we add the highest and lowest elevations and divide by 2:
(360 + (-7)) / 2 = 353.5 / 2 = 176.75 feet

For New Orleans:
Highest elevation: 25 feet
Lowest elevation: -8 feet

Using the same formula:
(25 + (-8)) / 2 = 17 / 2 = 8.5 feet

Comparing the average elevations, we can see that New Orleans has an average elevation of 8.5 feet, while Long Beach has an average elevation of 176.75 feet. Therefore, the city with an average elevation of about 2 feet below sea level is New Orleans.

To determine which city has an average elevation about 2 feet below sea level, we need to calculate the average elevation of each city and compare it to sea level (which is 0 feet). Let's calculate the average elevation for each city:

For Long Beach:
Average elevation = (Highest elevation + Lowest elevation) / 2
Average elevation = (360 feet + (-7 feet)) / 2
Average elevation = 353 feet / 2
Average elevation = 176.5 feet

For New Orleans:
Average elevation = (Highest elevation + Lowest elevation) / 2
Average elevation = (25 feet + (-8 feet)) / 2
Average elevation = 17 feet / 2
Average elevation = 8.5 feet

Now we can compare the average elevations to sea level.

In Long Beach, the average elevation is 176.5 feet, which is significantly above sea level.

In New Orleans, the average elevation is 8.5 feet, which is much closer to sea level.

Therefore, the city with an average elevation about 2 feet below sea level is New Orleans.
