Miracles
Walt Whitman, 1819 - 1892

Why, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of
the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love, or sleep in the bed at night
with any one I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with the rest,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of a summer
forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so
quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring;
These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place.

To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with
the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same.

To me the sea is a continual miracle,
The fishes that swim—the rocks—the motion of the waves—
the ships with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?

[In Just-]

BY E. E. CUMMINGS
in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it's
spring
and

the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee

Those are different questions and that's is not even me!!:(

Well, whatever Writeacher posted here, your answers are both wrong. Reread the poems and rethink your answers.

It seems like you have provided a series of statements and questions relating to two poems: "Miracles" by Walt Whitman and "in Just-" by E.E. Cummings. Let's go through each part and correct any errors that may be present:

"Miracles" by Walt Whitman is a poem that celebrates the wonders of the world, emphasizing the idea that everything around us is a miracle. The poem highlights various scenes, from walking the streets of Manhattan to observing nature, animals, insects, sundown, and stars. Each of these moments, Whitman believes, is a distinct miracle in its own place. The poem also expresses Whitman's belief that every hour, every inch of space, and every part of the Earth are filled with miracles. The sea, with its fishes, rocks, waves, and ships, is considered a constant miracle.

On the other hand, "in Just-" by E.E. Cummings depicts the arrival of spring and the joy it brings. The poem focuses on simple, playful imagery like a balloonman whistling, children running, and puddles. It exudes a sense of happiness and celebration of the season, as children engage in activities like hop-scotch and jump-rope. The poem also introduces the character of the "goat-footed balloonMan," adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. Despite the differences in subject matter, both poems employ imagery to convey their meaning.

Now, let's address the questions you have provided:

3. In what way are "miracles" and "in Just" different?
C. "Miracles" deals with people and nature, while "in Just" deals only with nature.

This option accurately describes the difference between the two poems. "Miracles" by Walt Whitman explores the relation between people and the natural world, while "in Just-" by E.E. Cummings primarily focuses on the aspects of nature and the arrival of spring.

4. In which ways is the use of imagery in the two poems similar?
A. Both celebrate simple everyday images.

This option correctly identifies a similarity between the poems. Both "Miracles" and "in Just-" utilize imagery that captures simple, everyday scenes and objects. These mundane images are elevated to a celebratory status in the poems, emphasizing their importance and value.

So, the corrected answers are:
3. C. "Miracles" deals with people and nature, while "in Just" deals only with nature.
4. A. Both celebrate simple everyday images.
