A’s DJ service charges a $200 setup fee and $75 an hour after that.

B’s DJ service charges no setup fee but costs $125 an hour.

we do not do assignments here

If you want to "cheat", there are websites that will help you with that for a fee.

I wasn't asking somone todo the assignment, i was asking for help on where to start with this problem in the beginning. I was not posting this to cheat, it is easier for the whole thing to be posted to know what it is about. never mind!!!! thanks for the help anyway!!

by the way this is actually a story problem in my text book so don't get so assuming that it is an assignment. its a simialr single "problem" to one I (figured out on my own thansk for the not so much help).

You're right. Jiskha tutors aren't much help for students who ignore our posting tips.

To set up equations for both DJ services, let's define the variables x and y as follows:

x represents the number of hours the DJ service is booked for.
y represents the total cost of each DJ service.

For A's DJ service, the setup fee (a one-time charge) will be $200, and the hourly charge is $75. Therefore, the equation for A's DJ service would be:
y = 200 + 75x

For B's DJ service, there is no setup fee, and the hourly charge is $125. Therefore, the equation for B's DJ service would be:
y = 125x

Explanation for variable choices:
- We chose x to represent the number of hours because that is the changing factor that affects the total cost.
- We chose y to represent the total cost because that is what we want to determine.

Now let's solve the system using different methods:

1. Graphing method:
To graph the system, we plot the two equations on the same coordinate plane and find the point of intersection, which represents the solution.
The graph would show the x-axis representing the number of hours (x) and the y-axis representing the total cost (y).

2. Substitution method:
To solve the system using substitution, we substitute one equation into the other and solve for the variable.

3. Addition method:
To solve the system using the addition method, we add or subtract the equations in a way that eliminates one variable, allowing us to solve for the other.

Interpreting the coordinates of the solution in practical terms:
The coordinates of the solution represent the number of hours (x) and the total cost (y) for both DJ services. The x-value represents the duration of the party or event, and the y-value represents the corresponding total cost for each DJ service.

Now let's determine which DJ is a better choice for parties of different durations:

If the party is only going to be two hours long, we substitute x = 2 into the equations for both DJ services and calculate the respective total costs. The DJ service with the lower total cost is the better choice.

If the party is going to be six hours long, we repeat the same process to calculate the total costs for both DJ services. Again, the DJ service with the lower total cost would be the better choice.
