If BD exceeds CD by 10 and
If BD=x^2 and CD = x + 4, compute x.
I tried:
BD = CD + 10
X^2 = (x+4)+10
x^2 = x+14
That's where I get stuck.
Do I convert to:
x^2 - x -14 = 0 ?
If so, how do I solve for x?

Assuming your math is ok as far as it went, have you not learned the quadratic formula? Use it, or solve by completing the square:
x^2-x-14 = 0
x^2-x = 14
x^2 - x + 1/4 = 14 + 1/4
(x - 1/2)^2 = 57/4
x = 1/2 ±√(57/4)
x = (1±√57)/2
